It is exciting to visit places for the first time, especially when you discover something that makes you happy. On our way to El Hierro, we had a one-night layover in Las Palmas, the capital city of Gran Canaria. We wanted to experience the feel of a large city before throwing ourselves into the unknown on Europe’s last outpost in the southwest—a small volcanic island far from urban life.
After some cold months in La Herradura, it was nice to feel more tropical weather when we landed in Gran Canaria. It is the second-most populous island of the Canaries, an African archipelago part of Spain. The seven Canarian islands are considered to have the best climate in the world, often referred to as having the “eternal spring.” I embraced the sunshine, and suddenly, I missed the Philippine heat.
We had booked a hotel close to Las Palmas’ famous beach, Las Canteras, and had a relaxed evening out. Not so much to write about, but I loved the atmosphere as well as the food. I enjoyed our walk in the afternoon while watching the sunset, and I loved the nice surprise I got when I discovered what the city is doing to protect the environment. We took some photos, and as you can see, Las Palmas was good to us. 🙂

Getting a glimpse of the city is nice enough, but seeing the following sign made me appreciate the city’s efforts to protect the environment.
