Back in Spain, we took an afternoon trip to Nerja, another famous tourist town just a 20-minute bus ride from La Herradura.  I wanted to see the Balcony of Europe, a plateau on the edge of a cliff with grand views off the coast under the mountains and the infinite sea. It was once a part of a fortress and is now the greatest tourist attraction located in the old center of Nerja.

The Paseo Balcón de Europa or the promenade leading to the balcony has a line-up of coffee shops, restaurants, bars, souvenirs, and gift-items stores all nicely incorporated in the old and rustic setting that has made Nerja so famous as a tourist destination.

We ate lunch at Puerto del Mar restaurant with a fantastic view of the beach under us, then continued for ice-cream from one of the many parlors surrounding the balcony. We walked down to a statue of King Alfonso XII standing relaxed by the railing.
