Back in Spain, we took an afternoon trip to Nerja, another famous tourist town just a 20-minute bus ride from La Herradura. I wanted to see the Balcony of Europe, a plateau on the edge of a cliff with grand views of the coast under the mountains and the infinite sea. It was once part of a fortress and is now the greatest tourist attraction located in the old center of Nerja.
The Paseo Balcón de Europa, or the promenade leading to the balcony, has a line-up of coffee shops, restaurants, bars, and souvenir and gift-item stores, all nicely incorporated into the old and rustic setting that has made Nerja so famous as a tourist destination.
We ate lunch at Puerto del Mar restaurant, which had a fantastic view of the beach below. Then, we continued with ice cream from one of the many parlors surrounding the balcony. We walked down to a statue of King Alfonso XII standing relaxed by the railing.
