I am happy because I’m one step closer to my dream of speaking Spanish fluently. I have discovered a new language meet-up initiative that is not too far from me. Helping each other by sharing knowledge gives confidence, which is certainly needed when you learn a new language.
Immersion with supportive locals in language meet-ups is an efficient method when struggling to break the ice in a new country. The right environment or language exposure can do wonders. It is also a good way to make new friends, and that is not always easy. Local communities, especially small ones, can be complex to be accepted into.
After returning from El Hierro, I learned about a new language meet-up initiative with meetings every Thursday from 8.30 PM to 11 PM at Mas Q Tapas bar in Almuñecar. At the same time, my husband and I met some Norwegian friends who had just arrived too, so the timing was perfect. We ladies could do something clever in Spanish, while our husbands talked about old times in Norwegian in a bar nearby 🙂
My friend, Ingeborg, and I went with full curiosity to the meet-up organized by some Spanish teachers. The drill started after getting to know each of the participants a bit. The first practice was English, and the topic was what we like to do during our spare time. After 20 minutes, we’re back in line again, and on counterclockwise, we got new partners and talked in Spanish. The second topic was about what country we would love to travel to. We proceeded in the same manner with the third English topic and talked about Donald Trump. The organizers and attendees are cool people. Here are some of our photos:

All in all, the event came out successfully. It was not bad for the first time, and I know it will keep improving. The meeting place was a bit noisy for us to hear each other, though, as other customers were in the bar. However, it was not so disturbing for us. Plus, we are in Spain, haha. Anyway, the Virgo in me called for an organizational itch, and my mind ran wild with suggestions. But there is always room for improvement. At least, an initiative is up and standing. We have to keep at it. Salute to the organizers!
