Layover in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Home » Blog » Life in Spain » Layover in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

It is exciting to visit places for the first time, especially when you discover something that makes you happy. On our way to El Hierro, we had a one-night layover in Las Palmas, the capital city of Gran Canaria. We wanted the feel of a large city before throwing us into the unknown on Europe’s last outpost in the southwest that is a small volcanic island far away from urban life.

After some cold months in La Herradura, it was nice to feel more tropical weather when we landed in Gran Canaria. It is the second-most populous island of the Canaries, an African archipelago that is a part of Spain. The seven Canarian islands are considered to have the best climate in the world, often referred to as having the ”eternal spring”. I embraced the sunshine and suddenly, I missed the Philippine heat.

We had booked a hotel close to Las Palmas’ famous beach, the Las Canteras, and had a relaxed evening out. Not so much to write about, but I loved the atmosphere as well as the food. I enjoyed our walk in the afternoon while watching the sunset and I loved the nice surprise I got when I discovered what the city is doing to protect the environment. We took some photos and as you can see, Las Palmas was good to us 🙂

Getting a glimpse of the city is nice enough, but seeing the following sign made me appreciate the city’s efforts to protect the environment.

Enjoy, respect and protect Nature…

..and look how clear the water is… when will we have a city beach like this in the Philippines?

A last taste of luxury before the next day’s flight to an even cleaner environment far out in the Atlantic Ocean :)
