Davao City: A Homesick Overview with Real Estate Listing

Most of my readers know that I am from Davao City on the island of Mindanao in Southern Philippines. I have written several articles about my hometown and surroundings, and today I’m following up with one more. Now and then, I feel a little homesick and the best cure for that is to use it as a base for an article 🙂

Davao City has many nicknames as The Fruit Basket of the Philippines, Most Child-Friendly City in the Philippines, Safest City in the Philippines, Durian Capital of the Philippines, New Jerusalem, Little Japan of the Philippines, King City of the South, Crown Jewel of Mindanao, and many others.

What I love most about Davao is the tropical climate all year round. It is typhoon-free and with easy access to both beaches and mountains. There are many options for eco-adventures and you can commune with nature without too much fuss and preparation. If you need some island-vibe or swim fix, you can just take a barge to the white sand beaches in a matter of minutes.

The cost of living is affordable and you can check it out here. The crime level is low and I’ve always felt safe both day and night, also going home from friends late at night alone.

Jeepney transportation is mostly 24/7 and taxis are widely available. Davao taxi drivers are notably honest and helpful.  The speed limit is low and strictly implemented, but as of this writing, there are many complaints about the traffic situation. The local government has been working on plans to establish a bullet train system to solve the congestion problem. I guess more and more people are flocking to Davao from other parts of the country due to safety and fast economic growth.

Real estate developments are growing; there are many condominiums, low-cost, and socialized housing projects in progress. The housing units sell like hotcakes with price appreciation each year.

There are scattered rainy days all year round and some parts of the city are prone to flooding during heavy rains especially in low-lying areas. I think solutions are underway like drainage repair and maintenance, and perhaps overhaul. But be aware of the problem if you are planning to buy a property.

The city of bloom and boom may be far from perfect, but it has been awarded for its many achievements. It pioneered many exemplary ordinances and social services and is one of the model cities in the Philippines. In my opinion, this also helped catapult our very own city mayor Rodrigo Duterte to the Presidency.
